Self-storage FAQs

Access

Many facilities offer unlimited daily access to their storage units, with 24/7 availability in some cases.

If you chose a traditional self-storage unit, only you, or the individuals you share your key or PIN code with, have access to your unit. In some cases, you may need to let your provider know the details of authorised persons in advance, so they’re able to let them into the facility.

Yes, most facilities will allow you to register a friend or family on your account to visit your unit.

Facility & Features

We’re not partnered with any removals companies – we’re just here to share helpful storage advice. Some storage companies may also offer removals services, so it’s worth checking with your chosen provider.

Not all self-storage facilities will have step-free access. If you will require a lift to move into your storage unit, be sure to enquire with the facility about access prior to booking.

Self-storage units come in all shapes and sizes, from small lockers, all the way up to 500 sq ft+.

Self-Storage is a secure way to store your belongings. All facilities should include security of some kind including but not limited to; 24/7 CCTV, alarmed units, pin code access, fire protection and staff on site.

If you use a large self-storage company, you should be able to adjust the size of your unit easily. We recommend creating a storage inventory prior to storing to help you more accurately assess your storage needs.

Insurance

Yes, in some cases, you can use your existing home or rental insurance for items stored in a self-storage unit. Check with your insurance provider and the storage facility to ensure your policy adequately covers your stored items and meets facility requirements.

Self-storage insurance typically covers theft, fires, vandalism, natural disasters, water damage, and pest-related damage for stored items. Specifics vary by provider, so review the terms carefully.

Insurance coverage for stored items varies amongst self-storage facilities. Some may include basic insurance as part of the rental agreement, while others may require you to arrange your own coverage. During your comparison process, enquire about the coverage options provided by each facility.

General

Self-storage can be tailored to fit your needs. You can rent short or long-term spaces for your personal or business items in secure ‘storage units’ or ‘lockers.’ Many facilities will allow you easy access to your belongings, making it a convenient and flexible choice.

Each provider will have their own set of rules for what you can store. Most things are fine, but you should be cautious about things to avoid, which can differ between companies. Most of it is common sense – don’t store anything that may be unsafe, illegal or may attract vermin. For example, make sure not to store any of the following items:

  • Firearms
  • Food or perishables
  • Flammable or explosive materials
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Plants, birds, fish, animals or any other creatures
  • Money
  • Stolen Property
  • Tyres

The large majority of self-storage companies will allow you to purchase packing materials directly from them. We recommend investing in double-walled boxes to keep your items safe, using plenty of bubblewrap, and ordering your packing materials well ahead of time.
